Rajasthan Royals confident against depleted Chennai Superkings

Rajasthan Royals confident against Chennai Superkings

C
hennai Super Kings have lost their aura of invincibility, a buoyant Shane Warne and his Rajasthan Royals teammates are optimistic of pulling off their fifth straight win when they host the MS Dhoni-led side in the Indian Premier League match here on Sunday.
Chennai side looked invulnerable till Friday night when Delhi Daredevils duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir tore them apart, much to the delight of the Rajasthan Royals.

Since their first match defeat against the Daredevils, Rajasthan Royals' graph has shot upwards and fresh from their win against Kolkata Knight Riders, Warne's men are ready to come hard on the depleted Chennai side.

"We don't want to be the fourth team in the semifinal. We are looking for fifth win and one more will place us comfortable. Then we would like to carry on for as many more wins as possible. Our aim is to remain at the top," said Darren Berry, coaching director of the Rajasthan Royals.

The hosts have the resources and strategy to realise their dreams and their strategy of surprising the opponents has paid rich dividends too. Asking Swapnil Asnodker to open the innings against Kolkata Knight Riders was such a ploy that paid off well.

Rajasthan Royals - Four-in-a-row

Rajasthan Royals RULZ

Jaipur: Till David Hussey and Sourav Ganguly were at the crease, win looked a possibility for the Kolkata Knight Riders, a distant one, but a chance all the same. Ganguly’s dismissal changed all that, as the rest of the six batsmen collapsed for less than 30 runs, as KKR collapsed to 151 chasing Rajasthan Royal’s 196.

Earlier, under very hot conditions, Shane Warne won the toss and elected to bat first. Unknown face Asnodkar hit a majestic 60, and Yusuf Pathan continued his form with a hard hitting 55 off 33, to take the RR team to 196 in 20 overs. Umar Gul did pick up 3 wickets in his four overs, but the rest of the bowlers - bar Ishant Sharma - did not rise to the occasion and allowed the batsmen to get on top.

With this loss, Kolkata Knight Riders have only two wins from five matches, where as RR are at eight points in 5.

Fearless hitting

Meawhile, Asnodkar, with a reputation for fearless hitting on the Indian domestic circuit, began with a top-edged four off Dinda. It was the beginning of a remarkable and exhilarating 53-minute IPL debut for Asnodkar.

He smashed Sharma straight down the ground, pulled Ajit Agarkar’s first ball for a six and proceeded to show what a short man like him can do to a ball. Asnodkar hammered ten fours and one six, a back foot stroke through point off Agarkar being the highpoint.

Giving him able company was Yusuf Pathan. Their manner of batting was almost the same, their ideas and execution free and airy. There was no grappling with theory. Asnodkar’s footwork was quick enough to lift the ball over the inner ring.

In between, Mohammad Kaif played a cameo that sustained pressure on the fielding side.

Rajasthan Royals - Win toss, bat first is Warne’s plan

SITTING PRETTY: With three consecutive wins, the Rajasthan Royals has every reason to be ecstatic.

Jaipur: It’s an old story now that Rajasthan Royals went down without putting up a fight against Delhi Daredevils in their opening game in the DLF-IPL Twenty20 championship. Since then the Jaipur-based team has gone the extra mile and defeated Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers, Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers, Bangalore.

With Rajasthan Royals scheduled to take on Kolkata Knight Riders next at home on Thursday, its skipper and coach Shane Warne underscored the contributions made by Graeme Smith, Shane Watson and a few Indian players in the last 10 days.

Ahead of the pack

Warne said that his team was ahead of the pack on the tactical aspect and that the other teams were copying it now.

Warne revealed in advance that he would bat first should he win the toss. “They played on Tuesday night in Kolkata, are travelling the whole day on Wednesday and the match starts at 4 p.m. on Thursday when it would be boiling hot.

“It’s better to bat first and keep them on the field for ninety minutes. They have lost two on the trot and that must be hurting them. Now they are going to play on our turf. They are going to have new players, which again is going to be hard for them. But they (Brad Hodge and Salman Butt) can also be dangerous.

“We think we have got all bases covered. It’s all about doing the basics better than the opposition, sticking to plans and executing them very well.

“We are always coming up with new stuff. I don’t look at the odds. As a coaching group we are trying to get the best out of each player. I have been encouraging the players to be aggressive; attack, attack and attack is the slogan of our group.”

After the final practice session at the Future Cricket Academy, Warne repeated that Twenty20 could be anybody’s game. “There’s no set way. But we thought the best way to win games was to bowl first against Kings XI, Chargers and Challengers because we thought their bowling was not strong and that we could chase anything. It worked. We are having a meeting on Thursday and we have a spirited group to put up another good performance against Kolkata.”

The teams (from): Rajasthan Royals: Shane Warne (captain), Graeme Smith, Kamran Akmal, Yusuf Pathan, Mohammad Kaif, Shane Watson, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Salunkhe, Munaf Patel, Siddharth Trivedi, Niraj Patel, Swapnil Asnodkar, Sohail Tanvir, Taruwar Kohli, Pankaj Singh, Mahesh Rawat.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Salman Butt, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Mohammad Hafeez, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Wriddhiman Saha, Murali Kartik, Ishant Sharma, Ashok Dinda, Ajit Agarkar, Debabrata Das and Umar Gul.

Mascarenhas arrival bolsters Rajasthan Royals

Jaipur (PTI): A buoyant Rajasthan Royals team, already with its tail up after three consecutive victories in the high-profile Twenty20 Indian Premier League, is further bolstered by England all rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas' arrival hereon Monday to join the squad.

An official close to the Rajasthan Royals team said while Mascaranhas reached Jaipur the Australian southpaw Darren Lehmann will be flying back to his country.

"Dimitri reached Jaipur on Monday and Darren Lehmann, who was brought in for two games, is flying back to Australia. Lehmann was drafted into the team for Graeme Smith, who was not available for first two games but since then he has been instrumental in Rajasthan Royals success story."

"The promising all rounder's presence will give us more options. He is rated very highly by former skipper Shane Warne who has played with him during his tenure as coach and captain with English county Hampshire. Rajasthan Royals

We Don't use Computers, we use our Brains

Nine days and 12 matches into the inaugural Indian Premier League, only one captain among the eight has risen above the team by obliterating the individual performances of his teammates and attaining a position bigger than the team itself.

It is Shane Warne of Rajasthan Royals. Officially, he is the only captain without an icon status in the league, but for the youngsters in the squad, he is truly an icon par excellence.

The dynamic Aussie, captain-cum-coach of the team, has skillfully marshalled his troops by blending his cricketing skills and leadership qualities to perfection.

And the results are there to see as Rajasthan Royals have shed their underdog tag and emerged as frontrunners in the initial stage with three wins on the trot. After a thoroughly professional display against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday night, skipper/coach Warne disclosed the secret of his team’s success. “In T20 competition, we try to do different plans every game depending on the wickets,” said Warne. “We don’t use computers. We use our brains,” said Warne, whose ambitions of being a full-time captain for Australia had gone up in smoke mainly due to off-field reasons.

Rajasthan Royals have chased down the opponent’s target in all the three victories and the captain feels that for a young side it is better to bowl first, of course with due respect to the nature of the wickets provided for each game. “When you chase, you know what to do exactly and can plan accordingly. The other day, we chased a huge total like 215 (against Deccan Chargers) and tonight, (Graeme) Smith and (Shane) Watson got the job done for us chasing a small total,’’ said the affable cricketer who has contributed either with the ball or bat in all the victories.

In bowling, Warne believes that T20 is all about ‘mixing the pace up’. “You have to change the angle, change the pace. You’ve to bowl full, length, everything. “There are days when you do go wrong but other days it is going to come off,’’ stated the champion leggie, who emulated his compatriot Glenn McGrath to bowl only the second maiden over so far in the league.
